(bio) | northpointlighthouse.org | North Point Lighthouse in Lake Park may look placid, but it smoothly bustles with activity. Open since 2007, and now with a dedicated crew of docents, the tower and keeper’s quarters museum is open to public every Saturday afternoon 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Groups can visit by appointment. On weekdays, school groups learn about the lighthouse and/or Milwaukee maritime history and/or the museum’s many maritime artifacts. The Fresnel lens that cast light from the tower for decades is on display, rotating now as it did then. The Milwaukee Harbor Fog Bell is prominently displayed and can be electronically “rung”. The museum has many other historical and nautical items, some of them about and/or from keeper families. Other Lighthouse activities have included summer adventure camps for elementary school age students, Girl Scout troops’ badge work, and a fall adult lecture series on lighthouse and maritime topics. Volunteer gardeners have worked to remove invasive species and installed finish landscaping. The lighthouse hosts fundraisers to support its programs. For that purpose, it can be rented for intimate private events such as weddings, anniversaries, graduations, birthday parties or non-profit or corporate events on a case-by-case basis, consistent with the Lighthouse mission. The North Point Lighthouse’ new life is presented by the North Point Lighthouse Friends and a growing corps of volunteers. It is also indebted to more than ten years of untiring effort of the Friends, their generous large and small individual and corporate donors, above and beyond support by many officials and staff of Milwaukee County, and Milwaukee County Parks and a grant from the U S Department of Transportation. Rishi Tea began in 1997 when Joshua Kaiser, founder and tea buyer, recognized that the traditional handcrafted teas he grew so fond of during his travels in Asia were rarely available elsewhere. Joshua felt that North American consumers would embrace artisan tea as they did single origin coffee and fine varietal wine if they were given access to it at reasonable prices. Media Outlets| Alternative Publications (Shepherd) (bio) | www.expressmilwaukee.com | During a time when most of the country's prominent alternative weekly newspapers have been consolidated and streamlined by corporations, the Shepherd Express has beat the odds, remaining locally owned. The paper has emerged from its unlikely beginning as a satirical UWM newspaper - 25 years ago - to become one of Milwaukee's most respected sources of local news, politics, arts and music coverage, and has used its status to champion other local causes. After spending several years in New York and Boston, Sarah recognized the need for sustainable, affordable fashion, and returned to her native Milwaukee with a mission to fulfill this need. The color chartreuse is full of life: a light vibrant green, the color of a young bamboo plant, fitting for a "green" store whose mission is to provide a light-hearted guilt-free shopping experience. And chartreuse is the only color named after liquor! One created by Carthusian Monks in the mountains of France as an "elixir of long life." Also, within the word chartreuse is "reuse" which encapsulates the environmentalists' mantra to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Each of our soaps are made in small batches by hand with considerable attention placed on the ecological impact the business operations has on the environment...from ingredients used, suppliers selected, shipping materials, to internal recycling efforts. Milwaukee had one of the best harbors on the Great Lakes and the confluence of three navigable rivers. The emerging city of 1,700 people was growing and so was lake commerce. Greenleaf D. Norris, an early settler, opened a ship's chandlery and sail loft at the corner of Water and Erie Streets.
It was an era of ship building supported by dense forests of near by oak. Norris and his employee, Andrew M. Joys, supplied cordage, covers, oars, tackle blocks, fittings, oils, paints, pitch and provisions for the commercial sailing vessels. One of the ships built in the Davidson Shipyard at the foot of Greenfield Avenue was the Alice B. Norris, a three mast 189 ft. schooner named for Norris' wife. It was first commanded by Captain John Joys. The Joys brothers assumed ownership of the company in 1875.
The R. Laacke Co. was founded in 1887 by Richard T. Laacke, an 18 year old steeplejack, sign hanger and awning manufacturer. Tent making led to the R. Laacke Company's growth as a camping outfitter. For many years the company was located at 1025 W. Walnut. The firms merged in 1957 and moved to the present site at 1433 N. Water Street in 1961. H.C. Woehr, son-in-law of Richard Laacke, was president and principal owner for twenty-two years.
In 1982, Laacke & Joys was purchased by Ralph J. Wollmer, a long time Laacke employee, and Sargeant E. Joys, the fourth generation member of the Joys family in the firm. In 1996 the company changed ownership and is still locally owned and operated by the managing partner, Marsha K. Mather. Laacke & Joys continues to be Milwaukee's oldest manufacturer and retailer in Milwaukee. Our retail store features camping, canoeing, kayaking, ski & snowboard equipment, clothing & accessories along with casual living furniture.
Laacke & Joys precedes most present firms and organizations of any kind in Wisconsin. Quality continues to be the mainstay of our business, both in the merchandise we sell in the stores and the products we make in our factory.

A volunteer Board, representing the Faith and Union communities, is seeking to do this by operating a Fair Trade Store, Four Corners of the World.
The store is a marketplace for fairly produced and traded products including artisan handcrafts, coffee, tea and chocolate and sweatshop free clothing produced at worker owned co-ops in dozens of developing countries. The primary beneficiaries of the store are workers who are treated with respect and dignity and receive a family sustaining wage. Many of the products are made from recycled and natural materials which contribute to the sustainability of the planet. The store is a concrete and positive step toward transforming an otherwise unjust and unsustainable economic order.
The SWIFT Education Committee has a broader mission than that of the Four Corners of the World Fair Trade Store. The broad goal of the Education Committee is to educate consumers on all significant aspects of sustainability. This includes educating the public on the current state of affairs regarding air and soil contamination, food and water safety and availability, and human rights (including slavery, sweatshops, immigration, Fair Trade) as they are being impacted by current producer and consumer practices. To accomplish this broader mission, the Fair Trade Education Committee:
-produces at no cost to the public printed matter (such as brochures explaining what are and what aren't sustainable practices); purchases and makes available at no cost award-winning documentaries;arranges for knowledgeable speakers to talk to small and large groups;offers on-site Fair Trade sales.
A Shopping Guide for Fair Trade products and sweatshop free clothing in southeastern Wisconsin has also been developed and is available at the Four Corners web site at www.fairtrademilwaukee.org.
Through Four Corners of the World and SWIFT’s educational programs, there is a growing partnership between workers throughout the world and the people of Southeastern Wisconsin. These mostly virtual relationships are an essential step toward the solidarity that will transform the world. | | Stans Fit For Your Feet | www.stansfootwear.com | | | The Basic Shop (bio) | www.thebasicshop.com | The Basic Shop is an online retailer run by a lifelong Milwaukee resident who believes in the pure and simple things in life.
