Beans & Barley is an institution on Milwaukee's East Side. The 35-year old business is known both as a social hub and a seller of wholesome, homemade food.
As a neighborhood "specialty" grocery store for the East Side and greater Milwaukee, they offer everything from fresh produce to "fresh" greeting cards. From its beginnings as a Hippie health food store, it has carried full lines of vitamins and supplements, as well as homeopathies, books, and body care.
The "all-homemade" deli, with a large selection of hot and cold foods to go, includes a full menu of carry-out food from the restaurant menu.
The restaurant itself seats eighty-five people indoors, in addition to summer patio seating, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. The menu includes vegetarian and non-vegetarian specialties, beer and wine.
Comet’s mission is to make good, basic food from scratch. We hope our food will remind you of mom’s home cooking. Today we live our lives fast: we eat fast, and we’re surrounded by the same fast food—in every place, on every highway, in every city. So we make our food from the ground up! We take a lot of care in making our food and we use fresh, seasonal ingredients characteristic of the Midwest and purchased from as many local purveyors, farms and businesses as possible. With a simple menu and daily specials, we hope to bring back homemade comfort food with character. We serve breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner, homemade desserts and we have loads of vegetarian and vegan options. We also have an extensive beer list featuring over 130 carefully brewed craft beers as we believe good food deserves good beer!
The common thread in all things Devilishly Red, is that each place transcends its physical surrounds to provide customers with an amazing environment in which to eat, drink, and socialize. Diablos Rojos as a group seeks to create a unique experience for its customers by really concentrating on the ambiance.
The fact that our buildings are rehabilitated gems of local history is no accident. We strongly believe in breathing new life into buildings of great character to help bridge the gap between the places our food and atmosphere take people-- to the place where the buildings have been sitting for over 100 years!
We are proud of Milwaukee's heritage and excited about its future. We embrace all things urban and feel that strong neighborhoods make great cities possible. We are active in the community, in building relationships with our neighbors, and with helping to raise awareness of how great urban lifestyles can be. That said, we strongly value locations in high density, mixed use neighborhoods. We encourage living where you work and play. Our hope at each restaurant is that many of our employees are actually our neighbors and customers!

Rishi Tea was founded on the commitment to set the standard for quality and expand the awareness of tea and its rich, inspirational tradition. We offer superb loose-leaf tea imported directly from tea gardens across Asia, made according to artisanal, ancient practices using organic cultivation techniques and Fair Trade standards. From our modest beginnings over ten years ago to becoming an established leader in the specialty tea market, our mission has never wavered.
Rishi Tea began in 1997 when Joshua Kaiser, founder and tea buyer, recognized that the traditional handcrafted teas he grew so fond of during his travels in Asia were rarely available elsewhere. Joshua felt that North American consumers would embrace artisan tea as they did single origin coffee and fine varietal wine if they were given access to it at reasonable prices. He believed the same gourmet consumer who was willing to learn the difference between a Costa Rican coffee and an Indonesian coffee, as well as develop a refined palate for wine, was also ready to appreciate the natural complexity and flavors of premium tea.
Stone Creek Coffee was founded in 1993 by Eric Resch for one main reason – he loved Amazing Coffee and wanted to share it with others. We currently serve customers at our 8 retail stores and share our coffee and barista knowledge with our wholesale customers. Stone Creek Coffee has grown to employ over 100 people in our stores and at our roasting facility in a reclaimed building in downtown Milwaukee.
Stone Creek Coffee has always been focused on the idea that a company has a social responsibility to promote the interdependence of a company and its community. This value dictates how all employees treat one another and our customers. It also extends to how we source our green coffee. We strive to support our global community by forming direct and equitable relationships with the farmers who so carefully grow and harvest our beans.
Whenever you find yourself drinking some Stone Creek Coffee – whether you’re drinking it while waking up with the morning paper or while sharing conversation with a friend – we hope that you Sip Slowly and enjoy the experience.

Waxing philosophic, Howard Watts used to say that every home should have at least one piece of art that family and friends could gather around and talk about. It made the home a place of energy and learning; about how to be civil, how to place art at the center of our lives, enriching our children, passing on the traditions of beauty and handicraft. Watts is really so much more than selling “pretty things”! We sell the world’s rarest goods, each with a glorious story of history and artistry and pride. Setting a table weaves all of these stories together to create a mood of cheer in celebrating all of Life’s special occasions… both the magnificent and the simple.
We are often told, by our very well-traveled friends, that Watts is like no other store on the planet. Our emporium, (still thriving after 138 years!) Boasts the very rare mix of a family-owned entrepreneurial spirit with an exceptional historic edifice, one of Milwaukee’s treasures. We have simply the smartest salespeople and staff in our industry and objects that inspire you with their diversity and beauty. The results, which we’ve tried to convey in the store offer temptations of every sort for living graciously.
The Watts Teashop, Milwaukee’s most historic tea room, is perched atop our prestigious china and crystal store, serving homemade soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts, as well as seafood, chicken and special entrees. New chef Jason Stevens has added some exciting changes to the menu, while continuing to maintain a level of excellence with traditional menu classics our customers have come to cherish over the years; including our legendary Sunshine Cake and the famous Chicken Salad!
While others bury their heads during tough economic times, Watts has now chosen to take the opportunity to evolve our business! Subtle design and decor changes have taken place in the Teashop, the website is in the process of being completely revamped, and Watts recently welcomed the DeLind Gallery into our Stone & Steel Room, located at the south end of the main floor of the store, with good window exposure to Mason Street. Watts has been family owned and operated for over five generations and has come to be an important aspect in the local community.

In 1844, Wisconsin was still a territory. Milwaukee had one of the best harbors on the Great Lakes and the confluence of three navigable rivers. The emerging city of 1,700 people was growing and so was lake commerce. Greenleaf D. Norris, an early settler, opened a ship's chandlery and sail loft at the corner of Water and Erie Streets.
It was an era of ship building supported by dense forests of near by oak. Norris and his employee, Andrew M. Joys, supplied cordage, covers, oars, tackle blocks, fittings, oils, paints, pitch and provisions for the commercial sailing vessels. One of the ships built in the Davidson Shipyard at the foot of Greenfield Avenue was the Alice B. Norris, a three mast 189 ft. schooner named for Norris' wife. It was first commanded by Captain John Joys. The Joys brothers assumed ownership of the company in 1875.
The R. Laacke Co. was founded in 1887 by Richard T. Laacke, an 18 year old steeplejack, sign hanger and awning manufacturer. Tent making led to the R. Laacke Company's growth as a camping outfitter. For many years the company was located at 1025 W. Walnut. The firms merged in 1957 and moved to the present site at 1433 N. Water Street in 1961. H.C. Woehr, son-in-law of Richard Laacke, was president and principal owner for twenty-two years.
In 1982, Laacke & Joys was purchased by Ralph J. Wollmer, a long time Laacke employee, and Sargeant E. Joys, the fourth generation member of the Joys family in the firm. In 1996 the company changed ownership and is still locally owned and operated by the managing partner, Marsha K. Mather. Laacke & Joys continues to be Milwaukee's oldest manufacturer and retailer in Milwaukee. Our retail store features camping, canoeing, kayaking, ski & snowboard equipment, clothing & accessories along with casual living furniture.
Laacke & Joys precedes most present firms and organizations of any kind in Wisconsin. Quality continues to be the mainstay of our business, both in the merchandise we sell in the stores and the products we make in our factory.
Our loyal customers have been the most important factor in our longevity.

Photography feeds my curious nature, keeps me playful and challenges my creativity. While I strive to create a beautiful keepsake, making meaningful connections with my subject is equally important. I shoot primarily in black and white because its richness accentuates emotional and personality critical to a successful portrait.
My favorite subjects respond to belly rubs, ear scratching and squeaky toys. Why dogs? Why not? Prior to the shoot I ask a lot of questions in order to gain insight into my subject's personality: Does your pooch like playing in water or have a favorite toy? Would your child like to dress up as a super hero or make a mud pie? Do you have a special hang-out or want to skinny dip for your shoot? You know, the usual questions.

I shoot on location rather tan in a studio because it relaxes my subject(s) and creates a stimulating environment. I have found myself cruising in a '68 Cadillac and balancing precariously on a raft in a lake as a gleeful yellow lab splashed towards me. At Villa Terrace I huddled in the branches of a bush to capture a surprise marriage proposal. She said YES!
A photo shoot should be a helluva lot of fun, so be ready to laugh and roll with it.
During a time when most of the country's prominent alternative weekly newspapers have been consolidated and streamlined by corporations, the Shepherd Express has beat the odds, remaining locally owned. The paper has emerged from its unlikely beginning as a satirical UWM newspaper - 25 years ago - to become one of Milwaukee's most respected sources of local news, politics, arts and music coverage, and has used its status to champion other local causes. Publisher Louis Fortis and arts editor Dave Luhrssen are the founders of the city's thriving Milwaukee International Film Festival, now in its 6th year, and the paper was an early supporter of the Our Milwaukee campaign, covering the organization's launch on a front-page story in November of 2007.
This year, the Shepherd Express expanded its coverage of the Milwaukee area even further, launching ExpressMilwaukee.com, an interactive source for expanded news, arts, sports and music coverage, as well as exclusive blogs, articles and interviews. Between the print product and the website, the Shepherd Express now reaches nearly 300,000 readers, and is available free of charge at over 1,100 locations every Wednesday - and fresh daily at ExpressMilwaukee.com.

WASCO Windows began life in 1957 as Wisconsin Aluminum Supply Company, a manufacturer of aluminum siding and storm windows. In 1893 David Paulus, Sr. purchased the business from the original three partners. In 1986, WASCO began in-house production of replacement windows, as the market was shifting away from storm windows. In 2005, David Paulus Jr. (who holds PhD. In engineering from Marquette University) left an academic position in Germany in order to modernize the factory. Under his direction, WASCO has since invested several hundred thousand dollars in state-of-the-art machinery, demonstrating its dedication to producing top-of-the-line windows right here in Milwaukee. WASCO is also dedicated to its employees, and was one of the first Wisconsin companies to achieve SHARPS certification from OSHA for workplace safety.
WASCO builds windows in Wisconsin for Wisconsin. We strive to find the best balance between energy efficiency and cost for our customers. We offer traditional double-hung windows, slider windows, casement windows and in 2008 began producing extremely high quality European Tit & Turn windows. We warrant our windows, including the glass, for life. As a service to our customers, we also carry carefully-selected third-party lines of entry doors, patio doors and storm doors.
We install what we sell; our professional carpenters are employees of WASCO and not subcontractors.
We invite anyone interested to stop by our 124th Street location for a factory tour.

Get Sexy Boot Camp is Milwaukee's premier fitness boot camp for men and women. Get Sexy Boot Camps was founded in April 2008 by BJ and Naomi Gaddour. They were seeking an affordable way for men and women to get the best, most comprehensive fitness and nutrition program without paying the ridiculous cost of one-on-one personal training. They found the answer in creating Get Sexy Boot Camps, a lifestyle fitness program. They were able to deliver better results than personal training for one-third of the cost by delivering their services - which include exercise, nutrition workshops, special perks to local businesses and customized menus- in a group format. Within a year Get Sexy Boot Camps has risen to become one of the most in-demand fitness programs in Milwaukee. They have been featured several times on local television ad newspaper as well as national outlets such as American Public Media's: The Story and Brides Magazine. Get Sexy Boot Camps hopes to continue to grow its client base and spread the culture of health and fitness throughout Milwaukee and the rest of the nation.
